http://government.zdnet.com/?p=2065 read it carefully and completely…
I just read this… and it totally creeped me out?? Scientists are creating cells with no natural functions that they can later “inject” DNA into that will give it functions.
In this article they are trying to create a plant life that will automatically break down into ethanol for fuel in cars. If the plant did it automatically it would save us humans a step in producing ethanol that we currently have to go through, fermenting the plant material. It’s an interesting idea, however, I am not too keen on the idea that we are creating a cell that does not conform to anything we could consider living, then tossing some DNA in there calling it “biological software”?? Treating the whole mess like it’s a computer program that we can script and compile. We seem to be on the verge of creating custom-engineered life forms…
Tired of your houseplants always dying when you go away on vacation… Try our new improved Geneto-Ficus. It’s genetically and biologically engineered cells shutdown like your home PC at the touch of a button! No more worrying about watering the plants while your away! Simply return home and at the touch of that same button, your ficus returns to life, with no more fuss than it takes to turn on a light! For 19.95 (plus S&H) you not only get one but two of our fabulous Ficus, all with a handy remote control that gives you full control of your houseplants metabolic functions from up to 500 feet away!
I have a problem considering this kind of thing a technology. I don’t want to consider cells (living or otherwise) a basis for some scriptable genetic programming that we can then compile and run like Assembly code (the raw coded language for computers). Where do all the mistakes and genetic rejects go? Salad anyone?
